John Moffitt had a monster year in 2004 that climaxed with him winning the men’s long jump silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with a personal best jump of 8.47 meters (27 feet, 9.50 inches).

His performance gave the United States its first Olympic silver medalist since Mike Powell in 1992. Also in 2004, Moffitt became the first athlete in LSU history to sweep the NCAA indoor and outdoor long jump titles, winning the outdoor crown on his final jump at the 2004 NCAA Track and Field Championships.

A two-time All-American in both the long jump and the triple jump, he won the indoor long jump title at the 2000 NJCAA Championships and posted personal best marks of 7.97 meters (26 feet, 2 inches) in the long jump and 16.43 meters (53 feet, 11 inches) in the triple jump.
